Treadmill Computer Update
So I’ve been using my Treadmill Computer for a few days now, and I’ve made several modifications to my setup.
- I setup a secondary computer with a chair so that when I am tired (or need to use the computer when Tara is sleeping) I can sit and use it. I was originally going to use a KVM (Keyboard Video Mouse) switcher but couldn’t find one, so instead I just use VNC (Virtual Network Computing) to see my desktop over the network. Since it’s all on my LAN (Local Area Network) and not over the internet, it’s near real time and works quite well.
- I’ve raised my “desk” several inches. It turns out that if I have my desk too low, my hands start to hurt. At first I didn’t realize why - because it was comfortable. But then I realized that my wristes where actually bent - my arms angle down, and my wrists angle up. Not a good scenario. Once I raised my desk, my wrists are no longer bent, so my hands don’t hurt. It seems like it would be less comfortable, but it is actually better.
- I ran some audio cables so that I could use my speakers and headphones on either of my two computers - because I use my sit down computer for a lot of media and things (to watch tv and such on the internet).
So all in all, my setup is quite nice - and it looks super cool. I like it alot. Here are the things I would like to change about it:
- Right now my “desk” is sitting on a pile of books to raise it to the right height. It’d be great if it was mounted in a more permant manner.
- My treadmill is the kind that can fold to save space, but with my current desk setup, that is impossible. Along with making the desk more permanant, it’s be great if it would fold up or move out of the way so I can fold my treadmill up.
- I need to find a better desk for my sit down computer - as right now the monitor is just sitting on a shelf.
Oh yeah, and if you are curious - I’ve walked about 4 to 5 miles durring work this week - and this week has been a slow work week. I think on a more productive work week I could be walking over ten miles a week or more. This is a vast improvement over what I was walking a week - probably 1 to 2 miles max! :-)
